SI Southern Districts of Adelaide Inc

We love new members!
Soroptimist International is now almost 105 years old and our Southern Districts of Adelaide Club is nearly 66. Our long history is marked by many contributions to improving the lives of women and girls all over the world. We have special consultative status with the UN (United Nations) allowing to advise and report to them.
EDUCATION
We encourage women pursuing a degree in STEM or Sustainability and young mums working to complete their SACE through awards to recognise their efforts.
ADVOCACY
We advocate for changes to policy which directly affect women, such as the Child Support Scheme. Our voice is strengthening and politicians are starting to listen. You can be part of this - help us to speak up for those who have little power, influence or energy to tackle the big issues while they struggle just to survive.
PERSONAL SUPPORT
We provide personal support through organisations like Life-in-a-Bag, Days for Girls, Seeds of Affinity and Southern Women's Safety Services.
Our members work together to host fundraising events and raise awareness about the challenges facing women today.
OUR SOCIAL SIDE
As well as using social occasions for fundraising, we enjoy some just for their own sake. On the second of every second month we meet for morning tea or breakfast at a cafe. A welcome chance for relaxed friendship with like-minded women.
Through our friendships at the Club we actually support each other (as well as women we don't ever meet). Friendship and a sense of community and belonging have been the most common reasons for women to continue their Soroptimist membership. Some have been members for over 50 years!
Our club, together with 70 other clubs in Australia and over 3,000 clubs worldwide, is working towards a common goal – to improve the lives of women and girls. If you share these values, we'll be a good fit! There are many ways to participate in our work. First, we’d love to welcome you into our group.
Sound interesting? Let's meet!

Club Awards & Activities
Education:
Flinders University: Our club provides an annual prize of $1,000 for a High Achieving Female Science/Engineering Graduate to assist with her postgraduate studies.
Adelaide University: With other local Soroptimist clubs we provide prize money for two female students at Adelaide University, one for Gender Studies and another in the area of Science.
Literacy: We support literacy programs like Little Big Book Club for young children. We believe that being able to read is of primary importance. Time spent sharing books with children is a huge investment in their future and a simple way for parents to maintain and refresh their bond with their growing child. During Covid we supported Raising Literacy Australia with their provision of special starter packs and mini-libraries for children new to foster care.
Fundraising Activities:
Over many years SI Southern Districts of Adelaide has staged major events to raise funds for our local and international projects. These events include Spring Fashion Parades, a community event for lovers of vintage and veteran cars at the Motor Traders Training Centre at Royal Park, Film Screenings at the Capri, a 1940's Review/Soiree, Quiz Nights and good old Bunnings Barbecues.
This is a great way to discover your strengths. They might be in creativity, design, ideas, leadership or a cheerful personality! We value them all, and whatever else our members offer.
Our team of expert "barbecuers" are on duty for the public several times a year at Bunnings Marion. Extra help is often provided by "Soroptimisters" who enjoy wielding tongs and turning the onions and snags.
Coming soon is a High Tea on Sunday May 25th, 2 pm at Brighton Bowling Club & RSL.
Take a look at our facebook page for news about events and causes we support. There may be an item there that will touch something in you, raise an issue you would like to work on. It might be an event you would like to join for the fun and friendship!
